Hay Fever in Melbourne: Pollen is public enemy number one

Melbourne, the city of four seasons in one day. While that makes for interesting weather chats, it’s not such great news for your sinuses.

So, What Is Hay Fever?

The proper medical term is allergic rhinitis, and it’s a common allergic reaction to pollen. In simple terms, hay fever happens when your immune system mounts a full-scale defence involving sneezing, congestion, watery eyes, a runny nose, itchy throat, and sometimes even fatigue and poor sleep. All this from a bit of plant dust.

Why Melbourne’s a Pollen Hotspot

Melbourne is beautiful, but when it comes to hay fever, it can be a bit of a botanical battlefield. The city’s mix of European and native plants, changing climate, and those famous winds from the north can whip up a perfect storm of allergens.

Common Offenders in Melbourne:
  • Ryegrass pollen – the main culprit. It peaks in spring (October–December) and is responsible for most hay fever cases in Victoria.
  • Tree pollens – including oak, plane, cypress, and birch trees. These often hit earlier in the season (late winter to early spring).

Minimising Symptoms:
  • Check the pollen forecast: Sites like Melbourne Pollen Count and apps like AirRater give daily pollen updates so you can plan accordingly.
  • Dry laundry indoors during peak pollen days – sorry, no fresh outdoor linen smell, but fewer sneezes!
  • Wear sunglasses when outside to protect your eyes.
  • Avoid mowing lawns or walking through grassy fields, especially in the morning when pollen is highest.
What Can Your GP Do for You?

We GPs see hay fever sufferers all the time, especially around spring. Thankfully, we’ve got a good toolkit to help you breathe easier and reclaim your sanity.

Small Steps That Can Help in Winter

Alongside professional support, small changes to your daily routine can help improve mood and energy levels:

  • Get outside when you can, even a short walk during daylight hours can help.
  • Open blinds and sit near natural light during the day.
  • Keep a regular sleep routine, even if you’re tempted to hibernate.
  • Exercise regularly, even indoors, movement is a powerful mood booster.
  • Stay connected, a phone call or catch-up with a friend can make a difference.
  • Limit alcohol, which can worsen mood and affect sleep quality.
Common Treatments We May Recommend:
  • Antihistamines: These block histamine (the chemical your body releases during an allergic reaction).
  • Nasal corticosteroid sprays or combined steroid and antihistamine sprays: These reduce inflammation in your nasal passages and are the most effective treatment for moderate to severe hay fever.
  • Saline nasal sprays or rinses: Useful for clearing out allergens from your nose, think of it as a pollen flush.
  • Eye drops: To soothe red, itchy, watery eyes.

When You Might Need an Allergy Specialist

Sometimes, hay fever goes from irritating to life-disrupting. If standard treatments aren’t cutting it, or you’re not even sure what exactly you’re allergic to, a referral to an allergy specialist might be the next step.

What Specialists Can Offer:
  • Skin prick or blood tests to pinpoint exactly which allergens are triggering your symptoms.
  • Allergen immunotherapy (aka desensitisation): This involves regular exposure to tiny doses of allergens to “train” your immune system to stop overreacting. It can be given as injections (in the arm) or as sublingual tablets or drops under the tongue.
  • Tailored management plans if you have asthma, eczema, or other allergic conditions alongside hay fever.

Immunotherapy doesn’t provide instant relief, it’s a longer-term commitment (usually 2–3 years),but it can significantly reduce symptoms and reliance on medications over time.
