What is Shared Maternity Care?

Shared maternity care is a model of care where your pregnancy is managed collaboratively between your GP and the hospital antenatal team. It’s an excellent option for healthy women with uncomplicated pregnancies who value continuity, convenience, and a personal relationship with their doctor

At Sage Medical, we’re proud to offer GP Shared Maternity Care in partnership with the Royal Women’s Hospital, Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital (Sunshine Hospital).

Why Choose GP Shared Maternity Care?
  1. Continuity of Care
With shared care, you’ll see the same GP throughout your pregnancy and after your baby’s birth. This ensures your care is consistent, coordinated, and informed by an understanding of your medical history, lifestyle, and family needs.
  2. Convenience and Accessibility
Appointments can be booked easily at Sage Medical West Footscray, with flexible times that suit you, and shorter waiting periods compared to hospital clinics. You’ll have fewer hospital visits while still benefiting from the expertise of the hospital antenatal team.
  1. Personalised and Holistic Approach
Your GP can manage not just your pregnancy but your overall wellbeing — including mental health support, vaccinations, nutrition, and management of pre-existing conditions. This whole-person approach helps ensure both you and your baby stay healthy throughout pregnancy and beyond.
  2. Ongoing Care After Birth
Your relationship with your GP doesn’t end once your baby arrives. Your doctor continues to support you with postnatal checks, breastfeeding guidance, emotional wellbeing, and your baby’s early health reviews. This smooth transition makes postnatal recovery and early parenting easier and more supported.
  3. Trusted Collaboration with Hospitals
At Sage Medical West Footscray, our shared care providers work closely with the Royal Women’s Hospital, Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital (Sunshine Hospital). These partnerships ensure seamless communication and co-ordinated care throughout your pregnancy journey.
Our Shared Care GPs

At Sage Medical, Dr Tara Hillen, Dr Rebecca Manger and Dr Kirsten Henderson all offer GP Shared Maternity Care. Each of our doctors has completed additional training in pregnancy care and is an accredited Shared Maternity Care Affiliate with our partner hospitals.

This specialised training means your care is in experienced hands, combining up-to-date medical knowledge, compassionate support, and a deep understanding of the physical and emotional journey of pregnancy.

Is Shared Care Right for You?

Shared maternity care is ideal for women with low-risk pregnancies who prefer a familiar, personalised setting for most of their antenatal appointments. If your pregnancy becomes more complex, your care can easily be transitioned to hospital specialists while maintaining GP support.

How to Get Started

If you’re planning a pregnancy or have recently found out you’re expecting, our team at Sage Medical West Footscray would love to support you through this exciting time.
